La Galleria Umberto Di Marino Arte Contemporanea è lieta di presentare, martedì 5 dicembre 2006, la prima personale napoletana di Jota Castro dal titolo Enjoy your travel.
Abbandonata alla fine degli anni ‘90 la carriera diplomatica, che lo aveva portato a collaborare con le Nazioni Unite e l’Unione Europea, decide di dedicarsi completamente alla ricerca artistica. La forte esigenza che lo motiva è quella di farsi interprete della propria epoca, di risvegliare le coscienze e di esporre il proprio punto di vista con la libertà che l’arte, nel migliore dei casi, riesce a concedere. I suoi lavori, spesso impregnati di una forte nota ironica, sono rivolti ad indagare fe-nomeni economici, sociali e politici, senza dare mai nulla per scontato, spiazzando lo spettatore per invitarlo a riflettere in maniera critica su ciò che lo circonda.
La forma si piega all’idea ed è per questo che non c’è mai preferenza di un mezzo artistico rispetto ad un altro. In occa-sione della mostra presso la Galleria Umberto Di Marino Arte Contemporanea, Jota Castro arriva ad una fase del suo la-voro, in cui l’aspetto manuale e la ricerca dei materiali assumono una nuova importanza nella veicolazione del messag-gio. Già all’entrata il pubblico è obbligato a fermarsi di fronte all’ostacolo della prima installazione “500 ways”. Un gommo-ne riempito di monete da 1 cent, per una somma pari a 500 euro, rimanda al viaggio di tutti coloro che mettono a rischio le proprie vite, emigrando dalla propria terra nella speranza di un futuro migliore. Dal coraggio dimostrato nell’affrontare le prove della navigazione, l’artista ricava l’immagine di un viaggio verso un sogno oltre i propri limiti, per quanto illusorio, così come doveva essere ai tempi della scoperta dell’America. Tuttavia, s’incontra subito un richiamo alle nostre coscien-ze con “Borders”, in cui gli specchi ci ricordano che il primo confine da valicare, per procedere oltre le ingiustizie ed i pre-giudizi, siamo noi stessi. Nella seconda stanza, poi, Jota Castro si sofferma su due fenomeni, uno politico e l’altro econo-mico, che influenzano profondamente i cambiamenti sociali, per l’evidenza che assumono agli occhi dell’opinione pubbli-ca. Con “China” si constatano gli effetti negativi che l’espansione del mercato cinese ha innescato su quello internaziona-le, incentivando una corsa al ribasso dei prezzi, che ha fortemente penalizzato le industrie nazionali. Analizzando la situa-zione italiana, ad esempio, uno dei settori più colpiti è proprio quello delle calzature, in cui le manifatture di grande tradi-zione subiscono spesso la concorrenza di scadenti prodotti d’importazione. Tuttavia, sono proprio le classi sociali che vi-vono maggiormente questo disagio, a contribuire al fenomeno, tendendo ossessivamente al risparmio. “Energy”, invece, gioca sulle apparenze e quindi, se delle bombole di gas dipinte con scritte in arabo possono costituire un’immagine facil-mente decifrabile, l’artista ci dimostra quanto i pregiudizi possano ostacolare la reale percezione delle cose, svelando che quelle frasi altro non sono che la traduzione di alcuni articoli della Costituzione europea. La conclusione di tutte queste riflessioni si ha nell’ultima stanza dove, attraverso un ardito divertissement nato dalla particolare conformazione della gal-leria, si esemplifica la condizione di un’intera comunità che tende al suicidio a causa della totale mancanza di spinta al cambiamento. “Enjoy your travel” è un’improbabile pista da skateboard, che termina fuori dalla finestra, portando l’immaginario acrobata a gettarsi contro il muro del palazzo di fronte, nel tentativo di scampare a ciò che fa da filo condut-tore all’intera mostra, ovvero le paure che assillano sempre più prepotentemente la società europea.

The Galleria Umberto Di Marino Arte Contemporanea is glad to present the first solo show by Jota Castro in Naples, En-joy your travel on Tuesday 5th December 2006.
At the end of the 90’s Castro gave up the diplomatic career, thanks to which he had worked together with the United Na-tions and the European Union and decided to devote himself completely to the artistic research. What moves him is the idea of acting as a spokesman for his age, of stirring up the consciences and expressing his own view-point with the free-dom allowed only by art, in the best cases. His works are often soaked in a strong mark of irony, and aim at investigating economical, social and political phenomena, always without taking anything for granted, wrongfooting the visitor in order to let him reflect in a critical manner on what surrounds him.
The shape yields to the idea, and this is the reason why the artist never prefers some media to others. The installations presented for the show at the Galleria Umberto Di Marino Arte Contemporanea demonstrate that Jota Castro has come to an artistic phase where the manual aspect and the search of the materials have achieved a new importance in transmit-ting the message. As soon as the visitor enters the gallery, he has already to stop in front of the hindrance of the first in-stallation “500 ways”. A rubber dinghy full of 1 cent coins for a sum of 500 euros reminds him of the travel of everybody who risks his own life emigrating from his country in the hope of a better future. Taking into consideration the courage demonstrated in facing the problems of the navigation, the artist comes to the image of a travel towards a dream beyond man’s limits - though illusory -, as it had to be at the time of the America’s discovery. Nevertheless, there is immediately a recall to our consciences with “Borders”, where the mirrors remind us that the first border to cross to go beyond injustices and prejudices is represented by ourselves. Then, in the second room, Jota Castro dwells upon two phenomena, a politi-cal one and an economical one, that deeply influence the social changes for the importance they have in the public opin-ion. Looking at the installation “China” we can observe the drawbacks of the growth of the Chinese market and its influ-ence on the international one, that has stimulated a run in the fall of the prices that has deeply damaged the national in-dustries. For example, if people consider the Italian situation, they will observe that one of the most damaged sectors is the shoe one, because articles of excellent workmanship often undergo the competition of shoddy import products. Never-theless, it’s just the social class, who has to endure this discomfort, that shares in this phenomenon with his obsessive in-clination to savings. “Energy” instead plays with the appearances: in fact, if some gas bottles painted with Arabic signs can be a simply legible image, the artist shows us how many prejudices can hinder the real perception of things, showing that those sentences are only the translation of some articles of the European Constitution. The conclusion of all these re-flections is in the last room, where – thanks to a divertissement resulting from the particular structure of the gallery – Jota Castro illustrates the condition of a whole community inclined to the suicide because of the complete loss of the thrust to a change. “Enjoy your travel” is an improbable skateboard track ending outside the window that lets the imaginary acrobat throw himself against the wall of the opposite building, in order to escape the leading wire of the exhibition, that is to say the fears that trouble the European society more and more overbearingly.
